Contact heater vs Coolant heater

In order to evaluate which engine heater concept that is most efficient we have conducted tests with Euro 6 diesel engines using contact heaters, PTC heaters with pumps, and coolant element heaters.

Conclusions:
  • A contact heater is most efficient in order to preheat the engine block and oil.
  • A contact heater will increase the temperature in the engine oil approximately 30-35°C more than a coolant element heater.
  • A contact heater will increase the temperature in the engine block approximately 20-25°C more than a coolant heater.
  • A coolant heater will increase the temperature at the cylinder head approximately 30°C more than a contact heater.
  • By using a coolant heater the cabin temperature will for the 16 first minutes of the drive be 3-5°C above the same as for a contact heater.
  • Both the contact heater, the PTC coolant heater and the conventional coolant element heater are all almost reducing regulated emissions and fuel consumptions at the same level (less than 2% variation).
  • A contact heater (300W) will normally use 42% less energy to preheat the engine, compared to a coolant heater (550W).
  • Cold start: With WarmUp installed you start the drive with 22°C in the cabin, compared to reaching 20°C after 18 minutes of driving in a cold-started car.
  • A contact heater will increase the temperature in the engine oil, and ensure the evaporation of diesel in the system to work in cold conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What is the main benefit of using a contact heater over a coolant heater?
A contact heater is more efficient for preheating the engine block and oil specifically. It can increase oil temperature by 30-35°C more than a coolant heater and uses approximately 42% less energy.
Q2: What type of batteries is the DF-CG-001 charger compatible with?
The DF-CG-001 is specifically designed as a Lead-Acid Battery Charger for electric vehicles and multicharger systems.
Q3: How does the system perform during cold starts?
With the WarmUp system installed, you can start your drive with a cabin temperature of 22°C. It also ensures the evaporation of diesel in the system, allowing it to function reliably in extreme cold.
Q4: What is the input voltage requirement for this charger?
The charger supports an input voltage range of 160V to 250V, making it suitable for various power environments.
Q5: Does using an engine heater significantly reduce fuel consumption?
Yes, tests show that contact heaters, PTC heaters, and coolant heaters all reduce regulated emissions and fuel consumption at similar levels, with less than 2% variation between types.
Q6: What is the production capacity for the DEFA multicharger system?
The production capacity is 20,000 sets per month, ensuring a stable supply for large-scale requirements.
